TitleLetter from C H Byers, Unballah [Ambala], to Lieut. J [John] Herschel, Royal Engineers, Mussoorie
Date5 May 1863
DescriptionHe thanks Herschel for his note, which reached him as he took charge of the magistrate's office in the absence of Major Tickell, who went to Simla. Byers does not know what to do about the tea, which he supposed might be sent along with Bustle's pups, but 'Vic', who was bearing the pups, was found dead before delivering them. He discusses the death of his dog, and how the 'brute' responsible had earlier savaged a boy of eleven. He asks if Robert Scott could get him another 20lbs of black tea and 10lbs of green 'gunpowder' tea. Together with Herschel's this would make a load to send. He has made an attempt to get to Kussowlie [Kasauli] but he cannot get an answer from his chief and has lost the offer of a house because of it.
