TitleLetter from H R [Henry Ravenshaw] Thuillier, Camp Berghome, to 'My dear Herschel' [John Herschel]
CreatorThuillier; Sir Henry Ravenshaw (1838-1922); Anglo-Indian army officer and surveyor
Date7 May 1863
DescriptionHe thanks Herschel for his two letters and he sends a receipt and the value of the level scale. He was sorry to hear of Bramfill and the party having fever. His own party has kept clear of sickness. Herschel has told him of one of Haig's towers coming down and damaging his instrument; this has just happened to Thuillier but the instrument survived. Luckily it was in its box and retrieved before the whole tower fell. They have had much rain. He hopes to get back to Calcutta [Kolkata] around the 15th, with only two more towers to observe from, but they are not yet ready. He is pleased that Herschel has settled matters with the Pay Office, which is conducted badly. Thuillier has not heard from Hennessey since Madras, who was ill when getting on board ship for his return to England. Thuillier will lodge at the Military Club and asks if anything is happening with the Himalaya Club. Walker will tell Herschel more about the tower coming down.
