TitleLetter from C H Byers, Unballah [Ambala], to 'My dear Herschel' [John Herschel]
Date21 June 1863
DescriptionHe thanks Herschel for a long letter and discusses arrangements for paying for a delivery of tea, owing a balance of thirteen rupees. He gives news of his family and their health, his present station being healthier than Alahabad. He is still acting as Cantonment Magistrate on behalf of Major Tickell. Sir Robert Montgomery chose to offer the appointment to a friend or relative at Lucknow. Tickell has had to cancel his leave to return therefore and is displeased. Byers discusses the matter further and his own liking for the work. He asks if Herschel liked Pullan, whom Byers had introduced to Walker as a likely candidate for his department. He describes Holmes, who has not called on him even though he lives nearby. Herschel has noted the dwindling of the dog pack. Byers asks for a carte-de-visite and will return the favour.
