TitleLetter from John Eckford, Dehra, to 'My dear Herschel' [John Herschel]
CreatorEckford; John (1836-1881); British army officer
Date28 August 1863
DescriptionHe is sorry not to have a receipt [recipe] for gun bluing. He will ask a smith at Rajhar [?]. If not it might be sent to Shaikroola in the Roorkee workshops and he will blue a gun competently. Eckford gives other alternatives, including the armourer at Landour depot. A recipe might be found in Cooley's or Ure's dictionaries. He only has Holtzapffel and he does not mention it, except to say that the metal must be well cleaned with acid first. It is likely an easy process, but best to try a man who has done it before. Dan Robinson has Cooley's recipes.
