Description | He received Herschel's letter yesterday and is at the last station. He expects to be in Calcutta [Kolkata] by 20th May. He envies Herschel at Mussoorie as the weather has been hot, only relieved in recent days by storms and rain. He asks to be sent a photograph of [Thomas Tupper] Carter and will send his own on his return. The country is difficult, with not enough water to use boats. He notes Walker's promotion and that Dickens has recommended that they receive a travelling allowance and an annual increase of up to 800 [rupees?] and he thinks this will be sanctioned. Thuillier has not touched a billiard cue since he was at Mussoorie and may try to get there this year if he can complete his computations. There will be little good in seconding, if field officers are excluded and he has given up all hope of his captaincy. He asks if Herschel has heard from [John Baboneau Nickterlien] Hennessey, and discusses various other acquaintances. He enquires if Herschel wants the plate sent with the card [carte-de-visite] and notes that his are printed at Thackers. |
