Description | He gives thanks for Herschel's letter of the 18th. Wemyss if thinking of sharing a house with Dr Playfurd, whose family he knew at St Andrews, but he must first sell or rent his place at Dehradun. He likes this place [Agra] which is quiet and he spends the evenings playing billiards. They have commenced manufacturing ice there. He met one of Herschel's corps whom he had seen at Mussoorie. He has not seen Campbell, but met Ross Johnson who was there on an appeal case. He offers his estate to Herschel for 7,000 rupees, saying that property in the Doon is rising and it would pay Herschel well. He hopes Dera will become more lively. He was sorry to hear such a bad account of George Campbell's wife and he discusses various mutual acquaintances, noting that Herschel is trying to sell a house. He enquires if Campbell and Dan Robinson have succeeded in killing a tigress and cubs on the Rajpor road. He has had a letter from John Healy, who does not like Calcutta [Kolkata], where a malignant fever is now present. |
