TitleLetter from G [George] Strahan, Camp via Jeypoor [Jaipur], to 'My dear Herschel' [John Herschel]
CreatorStrahan; George (1839-1911) British army oficer and surveyor
Date29 November 1864
DescriptionHe is anxious to know if Herschel has been able to get his house from the Rajah as he intended. Strahan will have to look out for new accommodation. He thanks Herschel for the pamphlet on geodetic figures; he has not much time to spare for reading during fieldwork, but thinks he has digested it. He asks if Herschel has any copies on the method of reducing quadrilaterals, referred to in the pamphlet. He would like to have information relating to the methods in use at the department, thinking that they will need to go into the minutiae. He has just completed observing a quadrilateral where each of the angles agreed closely with the mean, enough to introduce weights in the computation. He wishes to familiarise himself with the business.
