TitleLetter from G [George] Strahan, Camp via Jeypr [Jaipur], to Lieut. J [John] Herschel, Dehra Dhoon [Dehradun]
CreatorStrahan; George (1839-1911) British army oficer and surveyor
Date23 December 1864
DescriptionHe thanks Herschel fot the forms and the explanation he sent. He has too many questions to put on paper and will put them off until he sees Herschel. He must have expressed himself badly in his last letter. He did not suppose that weights were at all necessary in applying the principle of minimum squares, but 'if you throw them into the mill upon grinding you get purer flour'. Harmony is most important but difficult to attain as the Survey spreads about everywhere, without a preconceived plan. It would almost be necessary to recompute nearly all previous work after each field season. The result would not justify the labour.
