TitleLetter from D G [Daniel George] Robinson, Meerut, to J [John] Herschel, Deyhra [Dehradun]
CreatorRobinson; Daniel George (1826-1877); British army officer and telegraph engineer
Date15 [January] 1865
DescriptionHe arrived yesterday from Kashipore and learned that Herschel had passed through and had promised to look after Robinson's gunpowder. There will be persecution if the contents become known to the carriers. Robinson has run out of large grain powder and asks Herschel to take out six cannisters of this and six of the no.2 and send it to him by any route other than rail. He thinks that it would be best to send it to the care of Captain Hamilton, the postmaster at Agra. He notes the frightful accident which befell Mrs Conway Gordon. He gives his movements, saying that he may be detained by further consultation about reorganising the department, as nothing has been sanctioned about his ideas and recommendations. He hopes to get a copy of the Dickens report for extracts and Herschel may entertain new computers, the amount sanctioned being about 17,000 per annum. His time is over as Assistant Superintendent and Thuillier's going home complicates matters. He describes his elephant being pulled down by a tigress.
