Title | Letter from Henry Trotter, Camp in Allahabad, to J [John] Herschel, Royal Engineers, Dehra Dhoon [Dehradun] |
Creator | Trotter; Sir Henry (1841-1919); British army officer |
Date | 9 February 1865 |
Description | He received a draft from Swinton for 150 rupees being the amount 'of the great walking match'. Trotter replied that Swinton should only have paid 75 rupees, half of the bets that he and Herschel shared. Swinton thinks this is correct but he made no arrangement with Herschel. Trotter gives a list of bets and a longer account of the arrangement, which neither of tham kept a memorandum on. He thinks that Herschel will set them right. When he returns to Mussoorie, Trotter will have the whole distance to the top of Budraj measured by chain as he is not convinced that the distance is under ten miles. Herschel's calculation is 8.93 miles but Trotter will bet 50 rupees that the distance exceeds 9.5 miles. He asks if Herschel has news of Walker. |
