TitleLetter from Henry Trotter, Camp in Allahabad, to J [John] Herschel, Dehra Dhoon [Dehradun]
CreatorTrotter; Sir Henry (1841-1919); British army officer
Date12 February 1865
DescriptionHe thanks Herschel for the draft. Bhortan [Bhutan] seems fatal to officers of the Royal Engineers. Collins was 9/10ths killed and Urquhart, who was at Chatham with Trotter, has been killed outright. Pat Stewart's luck has deserted him too. Two more steps and Trotter shall have a pay increase, having been a second lieutenant for almost five years. There is no real news, Trotter shall be at Alahabad for another week, with two to three weeks' work left. He will write to [James Thomas] Walker to see if he can get leave as he wants to go into the interior for a couple of months. He wants to see Walker, as he does not know where he will be sent during the next cold weather, and if not in that part of the country he will sell off his tent, horse and dogs.
