Title | Letter from D G [Daniel George] Robinson, Camp in Jypoor [Jaipur] via Agra, to J [John] Herschel, Dehra Doon [Dheradun] |
Creator | Robinson; Daniel George (1826-1877); British army officer and telegraph engineer |
Date | 21 March 1865 |
Description | Herschel's cheery letter was welcome and he thanks him for his help to Mrs Robinson. He was glad to find Herschel in good spirits as he often seems down and he hopes Herschel is out tiger shooting. Robinson is getting tired of hot sands and red rocks but there would be 'splendid coursing' with wild antelope if he had dogs. He shoots deer, noting three bucks from one herd shot last week. One had a bullet from an old matchlock in its neck. He describes his route for travelling, reaching Dehradun on 1st May unless ordered to Calcutta [Kolkata] to act for Thuillier. Thuillier will want one of his Revenue Surveyors to act for him irrespective of scientific knowledge. He thinks that he has more knowledge of geodesy that the Surveyor General or any Revenue Surveyor and should have prior claim to the scientific department. Having been submitted to the command of a second rate man, it will be some time before they recover from that mistake. [James Thomas] Walker may be made Surveyor General if he applies for it but Robinson thinks he does not covet the appointment. |
