TitleLetter from Thomas T [Tupper] Carter, Camp, to 'My dear Herschel' [John Herschel]
CreatorCarter-Campbell; Thomas Tupper (1838-1900); British army officer and surveyor
Date7 April 1865
DescriptionShould Colonel [James Thomas] Walker be at Dehra and wonder why Carter has not written since he has been officer in charge of the party, he asks Herschel to mention that he was waiting to hear from Walker as to arrangements. Carter could not have written without entering into his claims for retaining the party. When things are settled he will write on progress and his proposals for carrying on the work. He has finished his current station that day and has three more to complete the polygon. They had curious weather on the 5th, with heavy snow. One station is between 12,000 and 13,000 feet, and in permanent cloud. He has heard from Pullan, who has had a cold, and has told him to be at quarters by 1 May. Pullan asked to close work by 20 April, but that would depend upon the weather and he was complaining about the haze. Melville is married, and he asks Herschel, who was at the ceremony, to tell him about it. Carter thinks his wife is at Dehra with Mrs Robinson. He asks Herschel to write to him at Pari Gurhival, where there is a post office.
