| Description | Since his last letter from Narrainpett [Narayanpet] he has made short troublesome marches. He received post on the 24th, including the balance of money orders and others of his last pay bills. He notes actions resulting from these and a heavy bag of English papers received. The last three editions of 'Nature' contain little, but the last had [Jmes Francis] Tennant's telegram on observations and photographs [of the eclipse] and [Norman Robert] Pogson's, 'which does not want in self-satisfaction'. He quotes from these, and [J Norman] Lockyer's account of his eclipse expedition. Herschel's leave, having been granted, has now been cancelled. Vouchers are to be cancelled and he gives details of some items, including the Basevi Memorial Fund. He notes that Wood has sent log tables and says that he is surprised by the enthusiasm excited by the Prince's illness. He comments on loyalty and disloyalty to the Royal family, 'A Regency would have been very probable and rather dangerous'. He thinks he will not make rapid progress, stating that he must make bricks to build pillars. Rogers is at a station twelve miles away. He returns to bills and postal exchanges, concluding that he is glad she received the fern books. |
