Title | Letter from John Herschel, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 4 February 1872 |
Description | Herschel sent letters to Bangalore today, paying money into the bank and sending cheques. He has been considering the future and outlines his plans. His current group of observations will be finished by about 20 February, after which there will be four difficult marches to Sedashepett, giving its location. Then there will be ten marches to Nandair, crossing the Godaveri [Godavari] to Somtana station where Basevi's swing pendulum is; and that will be the centre of Herschel's third group of this season. He should reach there by 5 March. He will go on after three weeks to a point near Oomrawuttee [Amravati?] where he must get observations before the gap is filled up. He will then return by rail via Poona and will be done by the end of April. He has expressed his opinion about the futility of the work but intends to carry out his instructions. There is the possibility that he will be able to take ship at Bombay [Mumbai] if Mary is still at Ootacamund, but he cannot think of that yet. He has her letter of 29 January and hopes her fears are groundless, since she has been strengthening. Herschel has been able to get beef there and has sent three bottles of sherry ot Rogers, since Herschel drinks little. The camp will break to march to station XXVII and he may begin tomorrow night. |
