Title | Letter from John Herschel, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | no date [February 1872?] |
Description | He has nothing from the post office yet and therefore his instructions stand. Her account of the horse makes him nervous for her. He notes that spavin is an ossification of the inner hock, describing its effect. Herschel says that he would like to see the letter which 'made one feel India'. His eclipse bill will be liquidated without argument and he gives amounts. He sends a piece of polemic involving Mr [William] Crookes, who makes a good case, and Dr [William Benjamin] Carpenter within a Quarterly Review article ['Spritualism and its recent converts']. The rest of the Quarterly is disappointing and he condemns Mungo Ponton's work as 'trash'. The Astronomical Register 'is full of bosh as usual'. Mr Proctor read a aper at the Royal Astronomical Society exposing Mr Abbott's drawing. He gives a sketch of his movements between observing stations XXVII-XXX and notes his workload. |
