Title | Incomplete letter from John Herschel, Nandair, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 23-24 March 1872 |
Description | He is going to defend Collingwood for a change. He discusses Mary's perception of the inconsistency of her being asked to go home, while Emma's [(Anne) Emma Herschel, néee Haldane] leaving India is condemned. This was in part due to Mary's invalid status. They have faith in Mary and would wish to see her, something which Emma has not won. But is not edifying to discuss the domestic arrangements of others. [From midnight 23 March] His pay has arrived but he cannot touch it yet, as it requires the signature of an official who is away. He must send the money order back and get another for a place further on. There is no money order place at Ootacamund and therefore he sends her a cheque. |
