Title | Letter from John Herschel, Bassim, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 2 April 1872 |
Description | He refers to postal arrangements and will get nothing until the day after tomorrow at which time he must find paper worth 5,000 rupees waiting for him. He has not been able to get any cash since leaving Raichore. The Trigonometrical Officer at Hydrabad wrote to say there was no reason why he should not have drawn, but Herschel did not attempt this until the principle he was contending was conceded. He is now in a curious grove of Burgot or Bargat trees [Great Banyan], disreputable and in a state of decadence. She may recall his describing one in full vigour near Madura and this grove 'probably dates from time immemorial'. He believes that his vaccination has not taken, despite his being scarified in four places. He has written to arrange the railway journey. |
