Title | Letter from John Herschel, Dotra and Badgaon, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 11-12 April 1872 |
Description | He has just received her letter of 5 April. He discusses postal arrangements and is writing now because he will be busy tomorrow. He has had a fruitless night, observing only nine stars and sleeping at the observatory. He took down the sector and go on to Badgaon that night. He still has no rupees, explaining why, and has sent a fresh batch of bills to Oomraoti and will be enraged if they demurred. He cites the instruction from the Accountant General to pay survey officers, but notes too that Oomraoti, Mysore and Hyderabad are not under Madras. He will give no peace until he has a general victory on the matter. He gives an account of a letter of credit lapsing because of the Bangalore office being closed for the last five days of the official year, for Easter. He explains why other officers do not have similar problems, Herschel not operating in the same district. He covers three or four times the ground, he estimates. He thinks that by the time she gets his letter, she will be on her way home and within a week of seeing him. He is becoming feverish thinking of his own journey, but the thought of her travels sobers him. [From 12 April] His bills have been sent back on trivial grounds and he has telegraphed accordingly. He will send this letter by Coimbatore railway station. |
