Title | Letter from John Herschel, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 11 January 1872 |
Description | He received her letter of the 6th that morning and a communication from Bellamy which enabled him to send to Kurmool for money at last. There was nothing wrong on his part, but the Treasury Officer had qualms, 'the one snubbed by Rogers'. Instead of paying he referred the matter to Madras. While Herschel waited, he has been shooting snipe and reducing his observations. He is half determined to start a new system, which will give more trouble, but as he feared there is an error from an unknown source. It is progress in observing to show the source of errors, not just to eliminate them He expects rupees tomorrow night and he will then move to station XXVI, the name of which he does not know. He goes north, and if he gets no information from Rogers, he will go to Kodangal, some 500 miles which he will reach by the 20th. There will be another group there to take him a month. Afterwards he will fill in the gap, or as much as possible depending upon the weather. |
