Title | Letter from John Herschel, Amla XXXIX, to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 25 April [1872] |
Description | Last night was cloudy, clearing at about midnight, and Herschel resolved to remain for two nights then go. He managed to get fifteen stars, which was better than nothing and he hopes for a few more that night. As soon as 3.00am strikes he will take down the sector and march. Moortejapoor [Murtizapur] is sixteen miles away and he will arrive on the 27th to see about weighing and loading. He describes keeping his tent shut and wet to control the temperature so that he can write. He is wearing pyjamas, which he bathes in, and intends to sleep on the floor on a wet sheet. He fears his railway carriage will be hot. |
