Title | Letter from John Herschel, XXVI station, to 'Dear Honey' [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 13-14 January 1872 |
Description | He is pleased with her account of a ramble, as he knows the route, giving a sketch of it. He hopes she has not overtaxed herself. He received the Saturday Review on the 6th, asking her to use a wrapper and stamp next time, suspecting that the Raichore postmaster and his circle may have read it. [From 14 January] the last Fortnightly contained one of the best articles he has read, by Herbert Spencer in reply to [Thomas Henry] Huxley. He will read it again before parting with it., Helen Taylor also attacks Huxley, but wastes words. The Mail has ceased reporting on Tichborne [the Tichborne legal case], which he misses. His rupees have arrived at last. Herschel gives his itinerary, crossing the river to Maktal, then to Narrainpett [Narayanpet], arriving at Kodangal on the 21st. He thinks there is a post office at Narayanpet, which is 42 miles north of Raichore [Raichur]. He gives what he thinks will be the safest postal arrangements. [From midnight] Herschel has received Mary's letter and does not understand why material is wasted in making a solution of morphine. He asks her to sent him some, not in solution. He will be careful but it does escape from the little bottles; 'I stuck myself 3 times yesterday before I produced the desired effect...it is only the 2nd time since I left you'. |
