TitleLetter from Mary Cornwallis Herschel, to [John Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Mary Cornwallis [formerly Power; née Lipscombe] (1829-1876)
Date'Christmas Eve' [22 December 1871]
DescriptionShe laments the length of their separation and writes at length of her beliefs, need for peace, and consciousness of 'the nearness of an eternal overruler'. His letter has come and she notes that while he was riding twenty miles, Captain Maclear was telegraphing from Coimbatore to stop him. She drove again yesterday, and her horse, now christened 'Eclipse' took fright. Captains Waterhouse and Morant called on her yesterday, the latter enthusiastic about the hills and seeming to know as much as John about the [Norman Robert] Pogson failure. She notes Mr Gray's [bill] account and that she has gone twenty-three hours without morphia.
