TitleLetter from Mary Cornwallis Herschel, to [John Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Mary Cornwallis [formerly Power; née Lipscombe] (1829-1876)
Date2 January 1872
DescriptionShe wishes John a happy New Year. A discharged artilleryman with a certificate came again, but she gave him nothing, thinking that her finances are wrong, but being unable to explain matters to her satisfaction. She has been waiting for John's sketches in order to finish Willy's birthday present [William James Herschel]. Among the books she has is Isaac Taylor's 'Words and Places', which she has not yet found much of value in, but notes the root of the old English word 'ear'. Mary has had morphia today after an interval of twenty-nine hours and she discusses her reactions and symptoms. Yesterday she scarcely coughed at all and sat sketching while Esther tumbled around and came back in 'a fine mess'. In a brief pencilled postscript she reports that the Prince is the same, but Archbishop Pratt is dead.
