TitleLetter from Mary Cornwallis Herschel, to [John Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Mary Cornwallis [formerly Power; née Lipscombe] (1829-1876)
Date27 January 1872
DescriptionMary relates how she did not put down an offer on a bungalow, and Mrs Bessie later asked if if she would consider sharing a house. Captain S [Stevenson] is quiet and harmless, but his wife is wholly without refinement. A day in her company has assured Mary that solitude is preferable. A 'Fortnightly' and a 'Spectator' have arrived from John and could not have been opened en route. After a 'small battle' with Mr Gray, which she describes, she has the rooms until 12 March on her current terms. After rent, there is only 17 15 rupees left in the bank. She hopes John will think she did the right thing.
