Description | It is the tenth day since she received his last letter. The post brought a letter from Major John Campbell enclosing one from Mrs Bowring who writes from Torquay. Captain Lindsay thinks there are letters of hers printed in Mr Bowring's book which are almost coarse. Mary thinks that refinement was Mrs Bowring's special charm and therefore she is bewildered. She must write to Edward Power and to Bob, the former she thinks she must apologise to. There seems no prospect of her getting money and there is insurance to pay. She intends to go to Ootacamund, which she has been told is cold and frosty. Her health is better. Mr Davidson has made a croquet ground for he and his wife and the road up from the reading room is improved. |
