Title | Copy letter from John Herschel, Dehra [Dehradun] to [Mary Cornwallis Herschel] |
Creator | Herschel; John (1837-1921); British army officer and astronomer |
Date | 9 December [1875?] |
Description | He thinks he will not catch Mary at Calcutta [Kolkata] having only got her letter that morning saying she meant to take the steamer on the 8th. He is in a quandary, with the widow of an old General selling her furniture. This should be an opportunity, but she knows its value and can wait. Items which have not arrived [from England?] are listed, including furniture, guns, fishing tackle and clocks. Beds and necessaries can be borrowed. It is one hundred days since the 'City of Lucknow' sailed. If Willy [William James Herschel] can call on King and Company impressing urgency, some days may be saved. Holidays that year will be from 8 to 19 January. |
