TitleLetter from D J McNeile, Hurriah, to [William James] Herschel
CreatorMcNeile; Daniel James (1835-1874) British civil servant in Bengal
Date15 March 1865
DescriptionHe has forwarded a petition, innocently, for the founding of a dispensary and the appointment of a medical student to administer it, Kartick Chandra Chakrobati, who is currently treating cholera. It was brought by the same messenger as Kartick Chandra's report on cases. On becoming suspicious and questioning him, he 'admitted in the most delightful way' that the named petitioner knew nothing about the petition; Joy Harain Giri had said he would pay half the salary of a doctor and would like to have Kartick to supervise, the latter immediately made out the petition, forging Joy's signature. If William would like McNeile to make an official report on this, he will do so. McNeile notes the lack of a boat fit to carry a horse across the Kussoolpoor river. On trying to cross on one boat, McNeile's horse kicked and plunged, going overboard and had to be swum across. The area is important enough to have a proper boat, if William can arrange it.
