He has been anxious about his father's health and asks if he should come home again; he and Emma are 'ready to start at an hour's notice'. He has received a letter from Jack [John Herschel]. He describes his own happiness. The Smyths are staying with them, having lost a child a month ago. Alick [Alexander Stewart Herschel] is delighted with his appointment and William want to know how he is getting on. He has his father's note on the metre, but he has not heard from Heeley.
