TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Maldah [Malda], to 'Dear Aunt' [Mrs Stewart]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date8 June 1854
DescriptionHe apologises for not sending news, particularly as he should have congratuated his uncle [Duncan Stewart] on his new appointment. He wonders if this will change their plans to go home [to Britain] or alter their present residence in Calcutta [Kolkata]. The family appreciated the photographs of his uncle. He discusses family mail, including that 'old Mr Gordon' has left his father £5,000 in his will. Alick [Alexander Stewart Herschel] is to go to Cambridge in Autumn and the other boys are at Addiscombe. Cary will stay at Collingwood and Gordon is off to Constantinople. William notes rainfall and termperature. He went to settle an indigo dispute on the banks of the Ganges. The wind meant that he had to sleep in the guardhouse and he had a slight fever from a wetting, but he asks her to allay his uncle's fears, as he is well. He is in need of a cook, has heard nothing from Paxton about side-tables, and sends news of a marriage.
