TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Maldah [Malda], to 'My own darling Mother [Margaret Brodie Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date27 June 1854
DescriptionHe thinks that her enquiry on whether her 'chats' were troublesome is because his replies are so seldom. He thinks this is shyness or self-modesty, 'like as sensitive plant when even petted & stroked'. He discusses strengths and weaknesses at length, saying that he has scarcely known sorrow, and he is happy and enjoying India and his work thoroughly. The technicalities are over and the real work is ahead of him. He will leave the languages until he has grappled with the regulations. He encloses a 'wretched' picture of his uncle's house in Calcutta [Kolkata], explaining what went wrong with the negative and also enclosing an experimental picture of himself [not present].
