TitleLetter from Duncan Stewart, to 'Most Dear Sister Margaret' [Margaret Brodie Herschel]
CreatorStewart; Duncan (c.1805-1860); British surgeon for the East India Company
DateJuly 1854 [?]
DescriptionHe thinks she must be overwhelmed with correspondence. He cannot thank her enough for what she is doing 'for our poor lassie Emily', but intends to thank her in person next year. He hopes that she is now a grandparent. William [James Herschel] is enjoying excellent health and his work. The new Lieutenant Governor is not a man to waste talents such as his, and Stewart describes William's character in glowing terms. He send a pamphlet describing Maldah [Malda] and a map for William's sisters, who send exquisite letters. Stewart has had a narrow escape from becoming Principal of the Medical College, explaining why Lord Dalhousie refused to sanction the arrangement, which was an affront to his Lieutenant Governor and Council of Education, not to Stewart. They cannot now find a replacement and must work 'with a squabbling jealous set of 10 or 12 Professors all ready to cut each other throats'. It would have tempted him to stay in India, but he holds to his intention of going home in May next year, returning with Willy and Emily. In a postscript he notes that Lachlan Rate has plenty of money for all purposes connected with Willy's schooling.
