TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Maldah [Malda], to 'Dear Uncle' [Duncan Stewart]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
DateJuly 1854
DescriptionHe thinks that his uncle has bothered too much about the old cow he sent down, which he has only received 340 rupees for, but he is glad to be rid of it. He encloses letters. The river has risen, although it cannot be seen from the station. Two or three miles out the indigo fields are flooded, and William gives two caricatures of how the indigo must be cut and brought in. He asks if they have tasted Wilson's hop champagne and what they think about it. The past two days have been the finest he has seen in India. They have had almost two feet of rain. William gives thanks for consignments.
