TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Maldah [Malda], to 'Dear Alick' [Alexander Stewart Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date1 September 1854
DescriptionHe sends a picture of the [photographic] dishes he requires, which he forgot to enclose in his previous letter. He gives further instructions on what he needs, before acknowledging letters received from the family. The rains have started, which led him to break off the letter before resuming, since he would not have been able to reach the mail. Roads were flooded and in some areas boats had not been prepared. William is working hard for examinations, the Collector and Deputy have ordered William to report on undecided cases when he is sent up on 2 October. So far, his reports have been praised as clear, but they take a long time as each case is a new style. His health is good, but the season is one where he cannot hope to avoid boils, indigestion or some other illness. Muggy mists make it difficult to take exercise and he stays in the highest part of the house.
