TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Mofussil, to 'Dear Maria' [Maria Sophia Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date1854 [?]
DescriptionWilliam is away from European society, living in a tent, in order to examine estates and see that they have been properly measured. With the information he picks up, he can determine how much landowners must pay the Government, and he is able to solve disputes about boundaries. He makes decisions according to his ideas of justice, on the spot. Beacuse he has not spoken English for ten days, he has been writing much, and has run out of paper in consequence. William gives responses to his sisters on music, and he must wait to reply to Alick's letter [Alexander Stewart Herschel] about magnets, which William does not think will ever will be made to work machinery.
