TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Calcutta [Kolkata], to 'Dear Loo' [Margaret Louisa Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date18 March 1854
DescriptionHe gives thanks for her and Cary's [Caroline Emilia Mary Herschel] drawings. The photographs of Hawhurst disappointed him. On 11 March William was called up before the Governor General [James Broun-Ramsay, Earl Dalhousie] and received his degree of honour in Bengali. He describes the scene in Council, what Dalhousie said, and his certificate. He ought to go up before the Board of Examiners to receive another in Hindi, but he leaves Calcutta tomorrow. He has been appointed Assistant Magistrate to Maldah [Malda], where the Magistrate is Mr [E C] Craster. He has spent the day looking for Mr Forbes, to get his pictures before setting off. He goes up-river in a boat of his own, with two baggage boats and he expects it will cost too much. William has received a parcel of books, some silver nitrate, and blotting paper. He has discovered that his watch is not properly regulated, so he has set it himself. He comments on letters from his mother and Bella [Isabella Herschel] and gives directions for future mail.
