TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Belvedere, to 'Dearest Mother' [Margaret Brodie Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date14 March 1872
DescriptionThey start for Dacca [Dhaka] after a visit to the Lieutenant Governor [at Belvedere House, Alipore, Kolkata]. William encloses the notes he received and the advice that he should not encourage the idea that he would be relieved in November. [George Campbell] has been stiff at times and less formal on other occasions and William expands upon what he thinks the relationship is between them, their ideas being parallel. He received a friendly welcome from [Vernon Hugh] Schalch but thinks that the Secretaries and Members of Boards do not like William's appointment. They hardly speak about Lord Mayo in India as there is little to say on the matter [his assassination]. Some think he [presumably Sher Ali Afridi] had been unjustly convicted, others that the court did substantial justice.
