Description | The letter commences with a statement of what he thinks Sir William should do, and refers to no.3 of the Church of England manuals published by Charles Thynne. He quotes from this work, by Reginald C Burn, referring to Lord Kelvin, and lists the Fellows of the Royal Society 'ranged on the side of orthodoxy'. Christopher gives an account of being in a railway carriage with John Couch Adams, finding him to be a 'true believer' in scriptures. He thinks Herschel must have known him as an astronomer, sharing the discovery of Neptune. He notes the beliefs of Sir William's father and grandfather, encouraging him to write to The Times or to the Church of England Manuals on this. Such testimony would be of great importance.
With a note: '(1) [eg page 1] is in Monogram file]'. Presumably this is the first letter of the two referred to in HSF/3/23/41. |
