Description | In the introduction [to William Herschel's collected works] he refers to the volumes written in Herschel's own hand, with volume 1 being presented to the Oxford University Observatory. Hardcastle thought this might be a mistake, but Dreyer believes he was right. Professor Turner showed Dreyer the original volume in his lecture room last year. Dreyer has read the proofs of the introduction and he is therefore ready to return the priceless manuscripts the committee borrowed. He describes how he will divide them up for safety and he will send everything to Slough, addressed to Miss Herschel, unless directed otherwise. He expresses his pleasure at being able to study the manuscripts. |
