TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Junghypore [Jangipur], to 'Dearest Mother' [Margaret Brodie Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date19 October 1856
DescriptionWilliam has a weight of arrears in letter-writing. He is now living in one half of a house in which the other resident is 'old Stewart', Hay Tweeddale Stewart, whom he describes as loud, large, and irascible to a degree that has lost him all friends. He has just interrupted William with a request that he use the police to arrest two servants for some fault committed the day before. On refusal he has asked to see William's regulations: William advised Stewart to petition the cutchery court, at which time he would give reasons for refusing the request, and he details Stewart's continued hectoring. Stewart is generous and hospitable, however. His wife is equally violent and they live at a distance. When he launches forth, it is best to let the storm pass over, but William notes that he argued with him about 'Lord A', whom Stewart concluded must have taken £100,000 from Russia to have pursued the policies he did. Today has been the first cold day, leading William to wish he was on horseback and commencing camp life. Junghypore is now his official station and he will send his mother his picture, with maps of the district by the next mail, so that she may follow his cold weather tour. He thinks that his first trip will be upriver to Aurangabad to see Macleod. He has received letters from his father and from Johnny [John Herschel], and he asks if there is any possibility of John coming to Bengal.
