With an account of a sermon given by the new chaplain, a Mr Sturrock. On 20 March, [William James] Herschel had a slight fever, but was better the next day, and recovered by 21 March. Waterfield notes the Inspectorship of Education, which he and Herschel were candidates for, as 'hard and thankless' work, and neither are disappointed at not getting it. On 22 March Herschel was told by Pratt that the role would go to an uncovenanted man, and Waterfield criticises Halliday's method of making appointments. By 30 March Herschel had no further attacks of fever and they have rode or driven out each evening. Herschel was hard at work by 4 April and one of his assailants has received a sentence of seven years' imprisonment. Waterfield had a cold, for which Herschel gave him chloroform. By 5 April, Herschel was riding to Nuddea for his examinations. |
