TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Jungipoor [Jangipur], to 'Dearest Bella' [Isabella Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date20 January 1858
DescriptionHe has little to say that is novel. Having consulted his diary only one fact emerges, the arrival of the telescope by Ross 'a beautiful piece of workmanship'. He gives thanks to his father and Nicholas [Stewart] was quite overwhelmed by the gift. He describes the imaging, as achromatic as others, so he is puzzled by 'peculiar beauty of the Utzschneider object glass, asking for an explanation from either his father or from Alick [Alexander Stewart Herschel]. Music and pencil cutters have arrived, althiugh he cannot master the former yet. He asks if there is a book that gives music theory and notes difficulties with his concertina, including breaking tongues. If Johnny [John Herschel] is to have William's camera, he should bring a portrait lens out with him and William can give particulars for Ross. He has not heard if Alick will take up photography, notes the receipt of hairdresser scissors and he asks if it is Constance's handwriting, with other family queries. Photography is going well with Nicholas Stewart, but William has drawn back to being a sitter and an advisor. He wonders if the 'Overland Englishman' has reached home. He will now send the 'Overland Friend of India' whixh is a more sensible compilation. Recent news has included Sir M Jackson, a young civilian and long a prisoner at Lucknow has been put to death with Captain Orr and other prisoners.
