TitleLetter from William James Herschel, Camp Gheria [Giria] Battlefield, to 'Dearest Father' [Sir John Frederick William Herschel]
CreatorHerschel; Sir William James; second baronet (1833-1917); British developer of fingerprinting and judge
Date6 January 1859
DescriptionWilliam has just received English letters and one from Johnny [John Herschel] at Calcutta [Kolkata]. William has three months' leave and is struggling to get through work in advance of that. His plans will depend on John, but if he goes up-country, William will join him for two months to see Jansi [Jhansi] and take one month to see some of the rest of India and to take care of 'a couple of rascally teeth'. He hopes to get to Darjeeling and Kachenjunga 'the highest spot on Earth'. He has almost made up his mind to come home at the end of seven years, which will be in March 1866. He has written to John so that he can ask for a fortnight's leave to come to William and they might proceed from there instead of Calcutta [Kolkata]. The letter granting William leave was complimentary, and he quotes from it. He is delighted that his father thinks the plan for Alick [Alexander Stewart Herschel] is a good one and he will write another day about the financial position.
