DescriptionProfessor Gardiner and Sir John Vane first met in the 1960s, when they worked together at the Department of Pharmacology at the Royal College of Surgeons. Later, Professor Gardiner became Chair at the University of Singapore's Department of Pharmacology, where Sir John Vane acted as Examiner for a time, and it is evident that the two men held each other in high regard, also developing a personal friendship.
This file includes the following correspondence: letters of recommendation written by Sir John Vane in support of Professor Gardiner's applications for posts working with State Boards of Education in Australia (1976); correspondence concerning the pumps used by Sir John Vane for blood bathing, with particular reference to the peristaltic pumps by Harvard Apparatus Co., Inc. (March 1968); correspondence concerning Sir John Vane and Priscilla Piper's work on the RCS substance from guinea pig lungs (December 1969); letters concerning the departures of Sir John Vane and Professor Gustav Born, FRS, from the Royal College of Surgeons, and the possible future develompent of its Department of Pharmacology (1973); letters and papers relating to Professor Gardiner's applications for various posts at universities in the Antipodes (1975 - 1977); correspondence concerning Professor Gardiner's work at the University of Singapore on the measurement of plasma levels of drugs in therapeutic use (October 1978); letters and papers relating to Professor Gardiner's successful application for the Chair of Pharmacology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong's new medical school (March - August 1908); and correspondence concerning Sir John Vane's planned departure from the Wellcome Foundation (June 1985).
