Title | Copy letter from Anthoni Van Leeuwenhoeck, Delft, to Hans Sloane |
Date | 27 July 1700 |
Description | 'Of teethworms etc.' A response to a letter from Sloane [see EL/S2/15]. Leeuwenhoek describes a series of experiments and observations made on live worms or maggots which were reported to have been extracted from the teeth of a Mr Chamberlain and sent to the Royal Society. Leeuwenhoek suggests that the worms, which he compares to cheese mites, may have gotten into Chamberlain's mouth after eating cheese. He rejects the idea that the worms could have grown from Chamberlain's mouth. |
