CitationSwinnerton, Henry Hurd (Nottingham). D.Sc. (London). Professor of Geology and Geogrpahy, University College, Nottingham. An anatomist, palaeontoogist and geologist, distinguished especially for his philosophical treatment of fossils. Author of papers on the development of the skeleton of 'Sphenodon' and teleostean fishes; on the classification of Trilobites and Belemnites, the sutures of Ammonites, and on fossil fishes; on the geology of the Nottingham district; and on the post-glacial deposits of the Lincolnshire coast. Also author of papers on the use of graphs in palaeontology (1921) and on unit characters in fossils (1932), besides an important text-book 'Outlines of Palaeontology' (1923, ed. 2 in 1931), which is noteworthy for its original outlook.
