Citation | Coates, Joseph Edward (Swansea). Professor of Chemistry, University College of Swansea, University of Wales. Distinguished for his researches in physical chemistry, particularly for his work on liquid hydrocyanic acid, carried out with a view to studying the effect of its high dielectric constant on its properties as a solvent. He has also carried out researches on the fixation of nitrogen in flames, on the reaction between nitric oxide and chlorine, and on the densities of liquid oxygen-nitrogen mixtures. On behalf of the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries he has carried out a number of researhes on the pollution of rivers. During the war he was Senior Scientific Officer in charge of an important expereimental station. |
