Citation | Bailey, Richard William (Hale). D.Sc. (London). M.I. Mech. E. Mechanical Engineer. Head of Mechanical, Metallurgical and Chemical Sections of Metropolitan Vickers Research Department. Has made fundamental analytical experimental contributions on behaviour of metals at elevated temperatures. Pointed out that 'creep' arose from thermal softening of a strain hardened condition. Investigated embrittlement of steels at elevated temperatures. Discovered effect of nickel on tendency to embrittlement. Established time-temperature relation of Carbide spheroidisation in carbon steel and its relation to 'creep'. Derived combined stress relationships for 'creep' of value in design. Has advanced knowledge of fracture by fatigue under combined stress. Has made important improvements in examination of engineering materials. Is developoing a new method of improving casting of large ingots. Originated and is developing a new type of internal combustion and steam power plant. |
