(1) He was largely reponsible, after the last war, for the re-establishment of the Stazione Zoologica at Naples. (2) His support of the Marine Biological Association at several critical moments has played a fundamental part in the development of marine biology. (3) He has played a leading role in the organization of at least two important biological journals in this country. (4) As a leading authority on sponges he has made important contributions to biology.
