Citation | Carroll, John Anthony (Aberdeen). M.A., Ph.D. Professor of Natural Philosophy, Marischal College, Aberdeen University. Formerly Fellow of Sidney Sussex College and Assistant Director of the Solar Physics Observatory, Cambridge. Distinguished for his work in both mathematical and experimental physics and astro-physics, especially spectroscopy and spectro-photometry. An experienced and enterprising eclipse observer: first introduced thermostatic control under field conditions (Siberian Eclipse, 1937). Originated a powerful method of determining thr rotational velocity of a star, by Fourier-integral analysis of absorption line contours, the only method which isolates ' rotational broadening ' from other sources of broadening. Is the head of a vigorous department of physics, and has done much in establishing the place of physics in medicine, in both teaching and research. |
